Leech therapy is a special form of micro bloodletting. The medical use of leeches has a very long tradition. Even the Egyptians in the time of the Pharaohs used the healing effect of leech therapy.
In addition to the desired blood loss, we owe the effect of the treatment mainly to the secretion that the leech releases into the patient’s body during sucking. It is a mixture of more than 30 substances that have anti-inflammatory, pain and anticoagulant effects.
Application of the leech therapy
- Vascular diseases
- Venous congestions
- Varicose veins
- High blood pressure
- Pain conditions
- Muscle aches
- Spinal pain
How does the leech therapy work?
It is important to me that you come to a free preliminary talk in my practice before the actual treatment. This gives me the opportunity to inform you about the course and risks of the therapy. At the same time I can get an exact picture of your complaints and decide whether leech treatment is possible and sensible for you and how many leeches should be used.
The duration of treatment depends on the number of leeches used. With up to 6 flukes I plan a treatment time of 3 hours, with more than 6 flukes even 4 hours. The leeches themselves remain on the body for between 30 and 90 minutes; in individual cases, however, they can suck much longer.
At the beginning of the treatment, the leeches are placed on the appropriate parts of the body. Suction is experienced very differently by patients: from hardly noticeable to slightly painful. Through the sucking process, the active ingredients of the leech reach the body tissue and after the sucking process is finished, the leech falls off by itself.
The wound continues to bleed for 12 to 24 hours after treatment. Since this is an essential part of the success of the therapy, bleeding should not be suppressed. The wound is loosely covered with absorbent dressing material.
How long does the effect of the leech therapy last?
Depending on the symptoms of the patient, a single session is almost always sufficient. The relief effect or pain relief sometimes occurs shortly after the therapy, but sometimes only after a few days. The big advantage of leech therapy is that the effect usually lasts for months.
Where do the leeches for leech therapy come from?
Leeches have been classified by the legislator as finished medicinal products. They are therefore subject to the same safety and quality requirements as all medicinal products. I get the leeches from the Biebertaler leech farm. There the animals live in natural ponds and can develop vital and healthy.
After the treatment I send the animals back so that they can continue to live in the so-called “pensioner pond”.
